This September, our team walked block by block and found more than 400 retail businesses open in downtown Portland. While many businesses are operating under adjusted hours or by appointment only due to COVID-19 public health precautions, there are still many small businesses open and eager for customers to visit them this fall season.
“Many small businesses are still open in downtown Portland and they would love to see you stop in to shop local,” said Maureen Fisher, executive director Downtown Portland Clean & Safe.
The survey focused on the 213-block area of Downtown Portland’s enhanced services district (see map) and highlights a dynamic list of retailers and small businesses, of which the status of many is literally changing by the day.
Results released this week in partnership with the Downtown Marketing Initiative, Prosper Portland, Portland Bureau of Transportation and the Portland Business Alliance, greater Portland’s Chamber of Commerce, highlights a point in time and many of the businesses open and welcoming visitors.

718 TOTAL retail locations surveyed, Sept. 1 – 25, 2020 (excluding days due to wildfire smoke Sept. 14-18).
430+ OPEN FOR BUSINESS retail and restaurant locations. (Some open by appointment, or with adjusted hours.)
170+ CLOSED TEMPORARILY physical locations temporarily closed. (Business may still be open but only for online shopping.)
20+ CLOSED PERMANENTLY physical locations permanently closed. (Business may still be open but only for online shopping.)
80+ UNOCCUPIED OR UNDERUTILIZED retail locations that are unoccupied, open for lease or underutilized.
