Placemaking is how we transform downtown’s streets, parks, and plazas into spaces where community happens—through programs like year-round lighting, cultural events, and art installations. Every day, we keep streets clean and welcoming while driving foot traffic through events and storytelling, strengthening the downtown community and fueling Portland’s economic engine.
Street Tree Lighting
Our lighting program runs year-round, transforming downtown with illuminated street trees, starbursts, light canopies, and seasonal displays across 1,400 trees in the district. Beyond creating a welcoming atmosphere, the program improves pedestrian safety and comfort by keeping sidewalks bright throughout the year.
Public Art Installations
Public art brings color, creativity, and connection to downtown’s streets and spaces. From vibrant murals that transform blank walls into canvases to temporary interactive installations like Coraline’s Curious Cat Trail featuring 31 artist-designed cat sculptures throughout the district, we’re creating free, accessible ways for everyone to experience art in the heart of Portland.
Park Activation
We bring downtown’s parks to life with events and programming that create gathering places for everyone. At Director Park, we host over 300 free events annually, from live performances to cultural celebrations. Opening June 2026, Darcelle XV Plaza will honor the legacy of the iconic Darcelle XV Showplace and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community’s contributions to Portland.
Signature Events
We host signature events that transform public spaces into vibrant celebrations of art, music, culture, and community. These free, family-friendly experiences draw thousands of visitors to the heart of the city, showcasing the creativity and connection that define downtown Portland.
Visitor Assistance
Our Sidewalk Ambassadors serve as friendly local experts throughout the district. Our ambassadors provide visitor assistance, directions, restaurant recommendations, and information about downtown events and attractions. They’re walking concierges dedicated to helping both visitors and locals experience all that downtown has to offer.
In addition to hospitality services, ambassadors support community events at Director Park and across downtown, helping create the welcoming, vibrant atmosphere that makes our district special.
