  • 2. Cafe Velo www.yelp.com/biz/cafe-velo-portlandDining

    600 SW Pine St. Directions

Cafe Velo is a tiny slip of a restaurant made cheery with bright tins of Arabic-emblazoned paprika, stacks of flour-dusted cookbooks and an enormous glass jar of preserved lemons. Because the cafe is barely large enough to contain a kitchen, counter and handful of customers, the only place to eat onsite is at the shiny, fire engine red bistro tables and chairs dotting the sidewalk. Lauretta Jean's Handmade Pies has joined forces with Cafe Velo in order to bring you an eye-popping selection of sweet and savory baked goods.

  • 3. Portland City Grill portlandcitygrill.comDining

    111 SW 5th Ave. Directions

Portland City Grill still has a surprisingly adventurous take on pan-Asian cuisine, blackened tombo with wasabi-ginger beurre blanc, say, or mahi-mahi with papaya salsa and banana-coconut curry is worth the 30-floor elevator ride up Big Pink, but once your diners get up there, is anyone thinking about the food? No, they're checking out the sunset on Mount Hood or scanning Mount Adams for volcanic puffs.

  • 4. Little Bird www.littlebirdbistro.comDining

    219 SW 6th Ave. Directions

Little Bird, the bistro by the team of Le Pigeon, is open for lunch and dinner during the week, and for dinner on the weekends. Opening first week of December.

  • 5. The Velvet Lounge and Cafe at Mother's Bistro www.mothersbistro.com/bar.htmlDining

    212 SW Stark St. Directions

The Velvet Lounge and Cafe is an elegant space with gold and black velvet-flocked wallpaper, granite bar, luxurious velvet banquettes, and ceiling to floor damask draperies. Chosen "Restaurant of the Year" by Portland's Willamette Week, "Best Comfort Food", "Best Brunch", and "Best Lunch Spot by Citysearch, and one of "America's Top Restaurant Bargains" by Food and Wine Magazine, Mother's Bistro and Bar serves up slow-cooked foods in the heart of downtown Portland.
